Men’s Athlete of the Week: Daniel Saina, McNeese – So. – Eldoret, KenyaIn a field of 99 runners, Saina crossed the finish line 12 seconds before the second-place individual could Saturday at the McNeese Cowboy Stampede. The sophomore from Eldoret, Kenya, completed the four-mile race with a time of 21:07.7 to lead the Cowboys to a second-place showing amongst 14 teams. Saina has now finished as the top runner for the Cowboys in three consecutive meets. Women’s Athlete of the Week: Allyson Girard, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi – Gilbert, TexasPacing the Islanders with a 17:15.2 time in the 5K race at McNeese’s Cowboy Stampede, Girard won the race by 55 seconds. The individual win helped lead Texas A&M-Corpus Christi to the team title against six Southland teams and 14 squads overall. McNeese and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi ran at the McNeese Cowboy Stampede in Lake Charles, La. on Saturday. The Cowboys’ men’s team took second place while the Islanders won the event at the Enos Derbonne Sports Complex, where the 2018 Southland Conference meet will take place on Oct. 26. Southland weekly award winners are nominated and voted upon by each school’s sports information director. Voting for one’s own athletes is not permitted. To earn honorable mention, a student-athlete must appear on 25 percent of ballots. Southland Athletes of the Week are presented by MidSouth Bank.
