Clippers, Kings, Lakers, Staples Center to pay event staff during coronavirus hiatus

first_imgThrough the end of the NBA and NHL seasons, more than 2,800 hourly event staff who work Kings, Lakers and Clippers games at Staples Center will receive compensation for wages lost due to the suspension of events in response to the COVID-19 outbreak.As the Southern California News Group reported Friday, the three teams and Staples Center joined forces to establish a fund to provide payments to ushers, security officers, ticket sellers, ticket takers, parking attendants, merchandise staff, food and beverage employees, housekeeping and operations staff and stage hands, among others.They’ll be paid for all shifts lost for all sporting events they were scheduled to work if they don’t take place.“Recognizing that the coronavirus is not just a health crisis but also an economic one, the organizations have come together in this unprecedented way to help the valued employees who work tirelessly to deliver outstanding guest experiences and teamwork that is the heart of STAPLES Center,” the three organizations wrote in a joint news release. This includes employees such as team statisticians, announcers and dance teams. Both franchises also asked employees to work from home if possible.On Friday afternoon, Staples Center donated 7,000 pounds of food that would have been wasted because of the lack of events.
