Yet, candidates seeking the ‘bargaining chip’ of an offer from elsewhere are playing a risky game, says Pentasia managing director Alastair Cleland.Losing staff is a huge cost for any organisation to bear. Staff departures are generally judged to cost businesses twice that employees annual salary, all considered.Comparatively, a conciliatory pay rise to maintain the status quo presents exceptional value for money. In igaming’s most talent-short specialist areas, the cost of lost staff is often even more significant and many businesses are fighting harder than ever to retain key staff.Counter offers are increasingly prevalent in the highest demand talent areas: casino and gaming product specialists; experienced legal and compliance practitioners, and following Malta Gaming Authority’s regulatory changes; tech specialists, C++, Java, Python and other back-end particularly; and those with international business connections. At Pentasia we now expect around 50% of all candidates to be counter-offered, and an even higher percentage of the most specialist and senior talent.Yet, counter-offers usually only provide a temporary fix. Candidates who accept counter-offers generally return to the job market within the year, for the very same reasons they initially sought to leave: new challenge, growth opportunity, lifestyle change.Money still talks when the offer is substantial, of course. In the past year we’ve regularly encountered counter offers up to +30% salary and even higher, plus offers including equity and additional benefits. On the whole, though, it’s only employers who are prepared to substantially improve the job itself – rather than the salary – whose counter offers succeed long term.Risks of playing the game Candidates, aware of the ‘bargaining chip’ value of an offer from elsewhere, can see counter-offers as a fast-track to salary increases. In recent months we’ve seen how this can be a risky game for individuals, often with serious drawbacks that can outweigh the potential win.First, hiring employers are increasingly cautious of applicants’ motives, and wary of those not wholly committed to moving. Those judged to be playing games will receive no offer and instead waste both their time and, in the longer term, their reputation.Second, current employers are increasingly wise to counter offer tactics. A larger company’s response can be measured, with counter offers coming in under the competing employer’s package and, crucially, HR noting the disloyalty. Even in candidate-short markets, power rests with the big players.Ultimately, it’s ambition on the candidate side and opportunity on the client side which creates a strong employer-employee relationship. This match – rather than short-term salary increases – is where we recommend all employment negotiations to be focused for the best outcome all-round.Key trends • In 2018, reasons for leaving have generally centred on either: career growth; or lifestyle benefits like flexible hours or remote working. Employers who can provide both are far less susceptible to staff departures. • Big-name employers, particularly in tight markets like Malta, know that newer rivals will outbid them for talent. They rarely match these inflated offers though, aware of their value to staff in terms of additional employment benefits and long-term opportunity. • Start-ups and smaller competitors find most success using job titles and responsibility to attract talent away from the big players. Titles like “director of…” and team leadership, combined with a healthy salary boost, are often difficult for large employers to match due to internal structures. • Emotional attachment – far more than money motive – is the primary reason that candidates accept counter offers (or lack of willingness to leave in the first instance.) The power of loyalty, staff engagement and team unity cannot be underestimated. • Genuinely active candidates, looking to move on from a successful company and role, regularly receive at least four of five offers of employment. Hirers should therefore consider not only the counter-offer, but also offers from competing employers, when considering their bid. The free-to-download app allows users to access information and tools designed to help gamblers remain in control of their gambling. Kindred’s support of the initiative means that the Gambling Therapy app is now available in local languages across Denmark, Sweden, Norway and Finland. Maris Bonello, head of integrity and player sustainability research at Kindred, said: “It is at the heart of Kindred to provide a safe and secure environment for our customers, and we will continue to support projects that minimise the harm caused by gambling.” Adele Duncan, chief executive for Gambling Therapy, praised Kindred’s ongoing support: “Providing this much needed advice and support, now in an additional 10 languages, means that we can reach more people who may be affected by their gambling. “Our GT service is funded by the gambling industry outside of GB and without their support we would not be able to expand the app usage.” Kindred did not immediately respond to a request from iGamingBusiness.com to elaborate on its responsible gambling activities in the Nordics. The company did however recently reveal that it had submitted an application for a new licence in Sweden as part of the re-regulation process in the country. Kindred joined the likes of LeoVegas, Betsson, Svenska Spel and Cherry that have so far lodged formal applications. The new laws are due to come into effect from January 1, 2019. Confirmation of the application came after Kindred last month announced that it experienced a record number of active customers across its platforms during the second quarter, due to increased activity around the football World Cup. Kindred is seeking to build on this success by expanding its team and this month set out plans to open a new technology hub in Madrid, Spain, in a wider effort to attract more technology talent to the company.

It has also developed a new CSR strategy, Fair Play, to prioritise areas and issues to tackle in the year ahead. The group also made a series of quantitative commitments, including the doubling of the amount it voluntarily donates to problem gambling research, education and treatment bodies to 0.2% of UK gross gaming revenue, rising gradually to 1% by 2022. This was first announced in April, alongside its commitment to ending sports sponsorship and a call to end sportsbook broadcast advertising in the UK.By reaching that target in three years’ time it has expanded on the five-year pledge it made last week alongside rivals William Hill, Flutter Entertainment (formerly Paddy Power Betfair), The Stars Group-owned Sky Betting & Gaming and bet365.It said the amount donated would have been £20m based on its most recent financial figures.GVC has also said it will start the provision of safer gambling awareness and education programmes for school children through its partnership with EPIC Risk Management, the independent gambling harm minimisation consultancy. It will pioneer new approaches to transparent reporting on responsible gaming and betting, developing robust metrics and develop its partnership with Harvard Medical School to better understand and reduce the potential for problem gambling behaviour.“The past year has been transformational. GVC is now the world’s largest online-led sports-betting and gaming operator; a truly global operator with over 25,000 employees,” said Virginia McDowell, Chair of the GVC board’s CSR Committee.“Our growth has brought with it a commensurate expansion in the expectations around how we manage our responsibilities towards society, particularly as they relate to safer gambling. And let me be clear from the outset: Our ambition is to be the safest and most trusted operator in the world.”The donation pledge comes on the same day that NHS England chief executive Simon Stevens suggested a mandatory levy should be enforced if gambling companies are not willing to direct more of their money to helping the treatment of problem gamblers. In its CSR Report, GVC also made a series of pledges as a responsible employer, including the establishment of a “one GVC” culture across the company, harmonising policies and developing its employer proposition around a shared set of values and opportunities. It will also roll out Well-me, a targeted three-year plan to enhance the physical and emotional well-being of all GVC employees. As part of its Future Objectives, the group said it would start distributing funds from the newly established GVC Community Fund through grants of up to £5,000 around the key themes of supporting grassroots, women’s and disability sport as well as mental health and men’s health issues. In terms of responsible business operations, GVC said it would take steps towards reducing its greenhouse gas emissions by 15% by 2021 on a per capita basis. As this would most likely be linked to the construction of land-based facilities, the study noted, sports betting regulations could be passed, implemented and the market launched sooner.Ultimately the study concluded that casino gambling could have a “positive, but modest” impact on the state’s local economies. The study was commissioned following the passage of Senate Bill 1126, which was signed into law by Governor Ralph Northam in March this year. The provisions of the bill must then be revisited in the 2020 legislative session before they can be enacted, something that Representative Barry Knight aims to do with House Bill 4, which was pre-filed last week.It said that under the conditions set out in SB1126, five cities would be eligible to host casinos: Bristol, Danville, Norfolk, Portsmouth and Richmond. The bill states that cities must meet a number of criteria based on unemployment, property tax rates and population decline if they are to allow resort-style venues. In these five cities, the study estimated that each project would require initial capital expenditure of between $200m and $300m, with the venues to generate around $970m in net revenue, and $262m in gaming tax revenue by 2025. In comparison, it noted, the Virginia Lottery generates $600m per year after prizes are paid out.Read the full story on iGB North America. All non-essential shops will close with immediate effect, while people may only leave their house once per day per exercise and gatherings of more than two people that do not live in the same household are not permitted.Greyhound Board of Great Britain (GBGB) managing director Mark Bird said that while all racing would be suspended either way, he would appreciate more clarity in the Prime Minister’s statement regarding whether work is considered a “gathering”. It had originally moved all events behind closed doors from 21 March.“In responding to tonight’s PM’s announcement we have to suspend all racing tomorrow as this is the responsible thing to do,” Greyhound Board of Great Britain managing director Mark Bird said. “However there remains a need to clarify the government position in terms of ‘gatherings’ and ‘work’. 13th July 2020 | By Joanne Christie Email Address The reopening of retail venues last month boosted Italy’s sports betting market but thus far revenues have rebounded only to around the levels seen during the first month of the lockdown Regions: Europe Southern Europe Italy AddThis Sharing ButtonsShare to LinkedInLinkedInShare to FacebookFacebookShare to TwitterTwitter The reopening of retail venues in June boosted Italy’s sports betting market, but thus far revenues have rebounded only to around the levels seen during the first month of the lockdown.Total sports betting gross revenue across retail and online was €73.6m last month, more than double the €35.4m reported for May.The June total was almost equal to that of March, when bookies made revenue of €75.3m after being hamstrung by the widespread lockdowns put in place early in the month. With retail outlets reopening only halfway through June, the bulk of last month’s revenues came from online, at €62.7m.However, there has already been a shift in the market shares of bookmakers in the country. Last month Bet365 lost its leading position in the overall (online plus retail) sports betting market, with its share falling to 12.6% from 17.8% in May.Snai had the highest overall market share last month at 13.4%, while SKS365 – one of the first operators to reopen its retail network – was in third place, with its market share rising to 12.3% in June, up from 10.9% in May.Bet365 continued to have the highest market share of the online market, at 14.8%, followed by Snai (13.0%) and SKS365 (12.1%).Potentially as a result of sports activity gradually resuming, Italy’s online casino revenues fell back slightly last month to €98.66m, down from €105.51m in May.Though a 6.5% drop on the previous month’s total, the June figure still represented a healthy 57.9% rise on the same month the previous year. While it remained market leader last month, for the second consecutive month PokerStars saw a fall in its market share, which dropped to 13.0% from 13.9% in May.However, it remains some way ahead of its closest rivals Sisal and Lottomattica, which hold market shares of 8.7% and 7.5%, respectively.PokerStars continues to dominate both the tournament and cash poker markets by a considerable distance. It holds a 57.1% share of the tournament market and a 46.2% share of the cash market. But both parts of the vertical suffered significant drops last month, possibly also as a result of sports betting activity resuming. In many markets there was a noted increase in poker revenues during the lockdown, but if Italy’s reopening is anything to go by, this could prove to be only temporary. In June, tournament play fell to €8.4m, down 41.4% from €14.4m in May. Cash games fell by 32.7% to €5.9m, down from €8.80m in May.All data and figures from the regulator are processed by leading European corporate advisory firm Ficom Leisure, a specialist in all segments of the betting and gaming sector.Ficom Leisure also provides monthly figures on the New Jersey online market in the New Jersey iGaming Dashboard, Pennsylvania in the Pennsylvania iGaming Dashboard, Indiana in the Indiana iGaming Dashboard and Iowa in the Iowa iGaming Dashboard, all of which are available on iGB North America. It also provides quarterly figures on the Spanish online market in the Spain iGaming Dashboard, the Portuguese market in the Portugal iGaming Dashboard, and the Danish market in the Denmark iGaming Dashboard. Regions: Asia Europe UK & Ireland US Southern Europe Greece Italy New Jersey Companies: Playtech Gaming solutions giant Playtech expects earnings for the first half of 2020 to reach €160m, after a strong performance from its online and financials divisions helped offset novel coronavirus’ (Covid-19) disruption to retail and sports in the period. Subscribe to the iGaming newsletter Sports betting Gaming solutions giant Playtech expects earnings for the first half of 2020 to reach €160m, after a strong performance from its online and financials divisions helped offset novel coronavirus’ (Covid-19) disruption to retail and sports in the period. In a trading update released ahead of its interim results, due to be published on 17 September, Playtech said it took “early and decisive action” in the pandemic to ensure the health and wellbeing of employees and preserve cash flow. However, it added, some areas of its business were severely impacted by Covid-19, namely its B2B sports betting division. This, it explained, was heavily weighted towards retail, and suffered from shop closures as key markets such as the UK and Greece went into lockdown, and the sporting calendar was largely cleared. While betting shops in the UK and Greece had reopened, it warned that while B2B sports revenue had seen a recovery of sorts, it was still trading below pre-Covid-19 levels. The pandemic also affected B2C performance, with Italy’s Snaitech losing “significant revenue” due to shop closures and sporting postponements. However, it added, due to the low fixed costs and online contribution, supported by mitigating actions, the impact was minimised. Its retail outlets began to reopen from 15 June, and by early July the majority were back in business. Playtech noted that in July, Snaitech had performed very strongly, with retail rebounding, supported by continued online growth and favourable results from sports after they resumed. This online growth was seen across Playtech’s B2B online casino, bingo and poker businesses, which it said performed “very well” in the first half. There have been signs of heightened activity levels beginning to normalise as lockdown restrictions are eased, though it is still trading above pre-pandemic levels. The white label business, predominantly Sun Bingo, also performed strongly in H1, it added. In Asia, Playtech continued, performance was more mixed. While the region was negatively impacted by government restrictions implemented in response to the pandemic, it also benefitted from a new contract with a leading live casino provider since late March.TradeTech, the financials division, was described as having enjoyed an “exceptional” first half. It was said to have benefitted from increased market volatility and trading volumes, in particular for the period to 30 April, but also performed strongly in July. The strong performance of its online casino and TradeTech, coupled with the recovery of Italian retail operations, means earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) is expected to surpass €160m for the period.“Thanks to the outstanding response from our people and the early actions taken to protect the business, Playtech has demonstrated outstanding operational resilience during this challenging period,” Playtech chief executive Mor Weizer said.“It is pleasing to see the impacted parts of the business starting to demonstrate positive momentum and I am confident the actions we have taken will help us emerge stronger and cement our market-leading position.”This was aided by action to maximise liquidity, with shareholder distributions suspended in March until further notice. The share repurchase programme launched following its 2019 results announcement was postponed, and no dividend for the year was proposed at its annual general meeting. These saved the business €65m in cash outflows, Playtech said.It also amended the covenants for its revolving credit facilities to increase its net debt to EBITDA ratios for 2020, and had over €600m of available liquidity, including this facility, which has been drawn down. Early in July, it also received the remaining €36m from the sale of Snaitech-owned land in Italy.“In addition to navigating near-term headwinds, we’ve continued to focus on setting up the business for success in the long-term,” Weizer added. “During the period, we’ve worked hard to add new brands, expand relationships with our existing customers and entered the New Jersey market with our long-standing strategic partner bet365.” Topics: Casino & games Finance Sports betting Strategy 5th August 2020 | By contenteditor AddThis Sharing ButtonsShare to LinkedInLinkedInShare to FacebookFacebookShare to TwitterTwitter Tags: Mobile Online Gambling OTB and Betting Shops Spread Betting Email Address Playtech hails “outstanding operational resilience” in first half

After returning from the International competition in Belarus, I went home for a couple of days given that trials had been completed and a number of other girls had also gone home.“I responded immediately to the notice issued by the WFI, which they accepted in full and I returned to camp,” Sakshi told PTI.WFI officials said Sakshi, in her reply, wrote that she had gone home for Raksha Bandhan festival.“We had asked Sakshi, Seema and Kiran to reply to the show cause notices. Others, we have not even bothered to ask. They have simply been expelled for indiscipline. If they have problems at home, they can sit at home. We will replace them. We can’t afford the camp to suffer because of a few wrestlers. We can have more juniors,” Singh told PTI.Asked about allegations that the WFI has tried to manipulate trials by sending entries for the World Championship to United World Wrestling (UWW) without holding trials, Tomar defended the decision. The last date to send entries was August 15 while WFI conducted trials for women in non-Olympic categories on August 19 in Lucknow and men’s trials are scheduled for tomorrow in New Delhi.“We had to send a team to Belarus for the tournament and to Estonia for the World Championships.
